As a reproductive healthcare advocate, we know that accessing abortion care can be an overwhelming and stressful experience for many individuals. It is important to know what to expect when accessing abortion care so that you can make informed decisions and feel more in control of your healthcare.
At Pro-Choice YQL, we want to make sure that anyone who needs access to abortion care feels supported and informed. When looking for a clinic, you should find a compassionate and non-judgmental staff who will listen to your concerns and answer any questions you may have. We have a list of supportive clinics that you can access.
Reproductive healthcare clinics usually offer a variety of services, including surgical and medical abortions, and our healthcare providers are experienced and knowledgeable.
If you are accessing in-clinic abortion care, you will be given instructions on how to prepare for the procedure, including any necessary tests or medications. On the day of your appointment, you will be taken to a private room where you will be given medication to help you relax and ease any discomfort. The procedure typically takes between 5-15 minutes though you will be in the clinic from 2-5 hours (longer stays are usually necessary if general anesthesia is used).
If you are accessing medical abortion care or home managed abortion, you will be given a medication called mifepristone to take. This medication will block the hormone progesterone, which is necessary for the pregnancy to continue. You will then take a second medication called misoprostol, which will cause cramping and bleeding and help your body to expel the pregnancy. These two medications come in a kit called mifegymiso. You will be given instructions on how to manage any side effects and what to expect during the process.
It is important to remember that if you experience any distress or concern, call 811 to review symptoms. If you experience any of the following, seek emergency health care immediately:
• soaking 2 maxi-pads per hour for more than 2 hrs
• clots larger than a lemon for more than 2 hrs
• pain doesn’t improve with medication
• fever, nausea, diarrhea, or weakness occuring 24 hrs after taking misoprostol
No matter what type of abortion care you are accessing, we are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment. We offer confidential services and prioritize your well-being throughout the process.
If you are considering accessing abortion care, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at Pro-Choice YQL. We are here to support you and provide you with the information you need.

Effective pain management is an important component of abortion care, as the level of pain experienced during the procedure can vary. While some individuals may encounter mild discomfort, others may undergo more intense pain. It is crucial to be aware of the diverse options available to alleviate pain and discomfort throughout and after the procedure.
One method of pain management for in-clinic abortions is local anesthesia, which numbs the cervix and reduces pain during the procedure. Another option is conscious sedation, a type of medication that promotes relaxation and enhances comfort while the procedure takes place. In cases where individuals have a history of severe pain or anxiety, general anesthesia may be recommended by the healthcare provider, inducing sleep throughout the procedure.
It is important to acknowledge that pain and discomfort may persist after in-clinic abortions, and during medical abortions.. Cramping, bleeding, and soreness can be experienced for a few days following the abortion. Healthcare providers may advise the use of over-the-counter pain medication or prescribe stronger medication if necessary. It is essential to adhere to the provider's instructions and take any prescribed medication as directed.
Non-medical approaches can also assist in pain and discomfort management. Applying heat to the lower abdomen using a heating pad or warm compress can help alleviate cramping. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or guided imagery can also aid in managing pain and anxiety.
We understand that managing pain and discomfort can be overwhelming. We are committed to providing compassionate and supportive care and will collaborate with you to determine the most suitable pain management plan for your needs. Please do not hesitate to ask questions or voice any concerns you may have before, during, or after the procedure. Our goal is to ensure that your abortion experience is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
