Accessing Abortion & Sexual Healthcare
In Alberta and Canada, there are two ways to terminate pregnancy: in-clinic and self-managed.
In-clinic abortions are done in a medical facility by trained professionals, currently only available in Alberta in Calgary and Edmonton. These have been called surgical abortions, but the procedure is in fact not a surgery. In-clinic abortions are free to anyone with an Alberta Healthcare Card.
Any prescribing Doctor or Nurse practitioner is able to prescribe Mifegymiso (the abortion pill) for a self-managed abortion. You pick up the medication at a pharmacy and have the abortion at home. If you do not have a family Doctor, we can provide you with a direct referral to a prescribing medical professional in your community.
In-clinic Abortions
In-clinic abortions terminate pregnancy up to 20 weeks.
Medical Abortions
Medical abortions terminate pregnancy up to 12 weeks.
